Everyone’s life, situation, and experience is unique. Even if we both experience the same event, our perspectives and emotions will be different, the way we process the event will not be the same. Therefore, it is fair to say that no one can compare their journey in therapy to someone else’s. According to the American Psychological Association, 50% of individuals will begin to see improvement within 15-20 sessions. Some individuals may achieve complete remission and feel confident to maintain the tools they have gained from therapy. However, the length of time that one attends therapy cannot be predicted and it is important to have reasonable expectations regarding treatment time as therapy does not successfully end until goals have been reached that were mutually agreed upon between client and therapist.
I once had a friend tell me that the moment he starts thinking that he doesn’t need to go to therapy, that is when he knows it is working. In the past, whenever he would begin to feel emotionally confident, apply tools to advocate for himself, and take calm control of his life, he would terminate therapy. Life would be fine for a while but it wouldn’t take long before he would experience intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and not be able to implement the tools he was given. So he would return to his therapist and start retraining his brain and calming his body again. The external processor in him needs someone safe and qualified to be there while he works through events and emotions. He is someone who will likely participate in therapy for most of his life and that is perfectly OK. It is admirable that he recognizes that his well being is important enough to invest time and money into.
If we walk (and stay!) on the path we are given, and let others continue on their own journey, what greater gift can we give ourselves? Having confidence and being secure in who we are and how we are meant to live our life is invigorating. Get comfortable with yourself and lean into the gifts and talents you have been given. Whether you are in therapy for a short time, or you are a lifer, walk with your head held high and know that your investment in yourself by going to therapy is worth it. You are more than your past experiences, you are more than your mistakes, and there is a place for you in this world.
