Personalize your office space. If you have to share your office space, bring an item or two that’s yours to help you feel like it’s your space.

The Therapist Office.

A room that holds secrets, its walls witnessing great suffering and miraculous healing. A space for the sojourner to stop and rest to weep and to laugh. A castle of one’s dreams and desires or a boat on the voyage of life’s transitions. So much can be said for the therapist’s office. It’s a space for reflection and self-discovery. A scientist laboratory where one gets to attend to new theories and hypotheses, “Am I loved? Let’s find out.” The office is where our clients can take risks, learn to find their strength, and their worth. And when alone, the office can also be a quiet place for the therapist. A quiet opportunity for contemplation and strategy. Yes, a place of rest for the weary companion and helper. Sometimes actual rest where one takes a short nap when clients cancel and are waiting for the next. So much can be said for the therapist’s office, your office. A sanctuary, a holy place where the broken find their redemption, where one once was lost and now is found. The office provides the moment of transformative encounter. Quite literally, a place of healing. Much can be said for the therapist’s office. It doesn’t have to be fancy, and it doesn’t have to be cute. It should just be yours because you are the instrument of healing, it’s you and your client, the process of therapy itself that transforms the significance of the office space, it’s you that turns those four walls into something intimate, an experience of profound healing and change. Take pride in your office. It means so much!
