Dear Therapist,

I’m sitting here contemplating my day. The sorrow and pain we get to witness as counselors…some days are harder than others. Today was one of those hard days. Much can be said about the suffering our clients go through and much more can be analyzed by what it means to suffer and to heal. I encourage you to make time to contemplate on such matters, however, not on days like today. Not on your hard days. Instead, find a way to express and process your emotions and your experience during such time, allowing your clients’ sorrows to be transformed within your mind and heart, helping you to find meaning. Doing so might help you find comfort and solace.

And so, as I turn to do my daily reflecting on those moments, I would like to share words that may begin to articulate the sorrow, meaning, and hope that I aim to find on days like today.

A Client’s Sorrow

Hear sorrowful angel, whose heart is pounding

A heart like yours closely felt

Noting the desperation that is sounding

A flower in autumn soon to wilt

Your tears of sorrow softly fall

Giving witness to your cry of pain

And there in darkness I but saw

A beautiful angel whose heart is slain

Slain by the sorrow of a loved suffering

Put down by a voice of sinister hate

Hope and soul taken is sorrow causing

Giving way to a despairing fate

Your sorrow dear angel is greatly adorn

Your cry of despair attentively heard

One day you’ll find hope once more

Your sorrow and grief transformed

For in such great suffering, I notice light

In your sadness do I see

A willing spirit of determination and might

Believing in the wonderful goodness of who you are and who you’ll be
